The establishment of Sarajevogas is in direct connection with the realization of Human Environment Protection Project. Through the realization of the mentioned project, overall quality of life of the citizens of Sarajevo was improved. The present time and the recent past have proven and affirmed the expediency of natural gas use, both for heating and industrial consumption, as Sarajevo has become an ecologically clean city.

Let's remind ourselves that, due to its unsuitable position in a narrow mountainencircled valley and climatic conditions, with weak airing, the city of Sarajevo was faced, as early as 1965, with the problem of air pollution, one of the consequences of rapid urban and industrial development, with the pollution reaching its climax in the period from 1965 to1970. Because of inappropriate combustion chambers (room furnaces and boilers) with regard to solid and liquid fuels that were used, there was a high emission of incomplete combustion products (soot, carbon monoxide, uncombusted hydrocarbons), as well as the emission of sulphur dioxide that was a consequence of high sulphur content in coals and liquid fuels. Excessive air pollution dramatically endangered the health of the citizens of Sarajevo.

Today, after the emission has been reduced more than seven times since 1970, Sarajevo does not have excessive air pollution with sulphur-dioxide, while the emission of incomplete combustion products has been reduced tens of times.
